Dartmoor Arts

Stone Carving

Price:

Full week; £440

Tutor:

David Brampton-Greene

Visiting Tutor:

Peter Randall-Page

Course Description:

This workshop focuses on teaching students how to carve three-dimensional sculpture and relief work. We will teach students of all abilities on an individual basis and can respond as well to the needs of beginners as much as experienced artists. The students will have the opportunity to explore the Dartmoor environment and use drawings, photography and clay modelling, to study natural and manmade forms and to extract visual information for their own personal explorations. Informed discussions and debate about carving will be based on reference materials and existing sculpture found in and around the Dartmoor area, by local artists.

We will encourage students to relate their experience back to the studio and begin the creative making process: creating maquettes, blocking out, and finding simple/complex form. The students will work towards creating an individual/collaborative piece of sculpture/s in response to the course, while receiving tuition on any type of artistic/technical issue that may arise. Students will develop proficiency in the carving and the sculptural processes. They will gain knowledge and understanding of working with natural materials; learn to share as a group the success and difficulties of finding and developing a language of expression through form and will experience and appreciate the richness of the making process and the associated creative journey.
